2019.03.21 21:05 DonnaSawIt Fins Up in Sacramento California

Who wouldn’t want to belt out “Good times and riches and son of a bitches” with 16,000 thousand of your friends? Jimmy Buffett was in fine form Saturday night in Sacramento, California bouncing out on tan legs that stuck out of white board shorts, kicking off his flip-flops as soon as he got to center stage. From the first song it was evident that this party was going to be one giant sing-along with everyone from the little parakeets to the old crows joining in. You don’t have to know all the words, just chirp the ones that make you happy – words like “boat drinks” “the weather is here, wish you were beautiful” or “if we weren’t all crazy we would go insane”. Like a room full of Kindergartners the whole house leapt to their feet with hands over head to join in on “Fins to the left, fins to the right”. Parrotheads have been doing the OG version of “Baby Shark” since 1979. For all the cheeseburger hat wearing, grass hula skirted landshark fans there are the songs too that strike to the heart of aging, regrets and the wind in your thinning hair. Listen to “A Pirate Looks at Forty” when you are twenty years past that. The wistful line: “My occupational hazard being my occupation’s just not around” speaks to all the pirates that were born “two-hundred years too late”. Hands up for those of us who knew the guys that “made enough money to buy Miami but pissed it away so fast”. The Coral Reefer Band was solid as ever. These four have been with Jimmy for decades: Mac McAnally, the lead guitarist, is a ten-time winner of CMA’s Musician of the Year Award, more than anyone else. His wide guitar strap is emblazoned with the word NOBODY. The joke is on us, he is a major somebody. Still willowy Tina Gullickson and the outstanding Nadirah Shakoor have long been the superb backup singers. These women not only sing but dance to moves they do in synch for every song. A cross between hula, pantomime and air guitar, the right side of the stage was always in motion. Michael Utley, the keyboardist and band leader sits center stage. Add more guitars, percussion, horn, steel drums and the Coral Reefer Band really lights it up. By the time Jimmy launched into “Margaritaville” it was a full on good time beach party. Background video played the entire show of the most beautiful places on earth, outrageous Parrothead parties and very complimentary shots of Sactown taken that day. Have you ever really listened to Margaritaville? Forget the booze in the blender. It’s the way he rationalizes “It’s nobody’s fault” to “well…. it could be my fault?” and then ends with the ah-ha moment of “it’s my own damn fault!”. Who can’t relate to that? His encore included “Southern Cross”, a Crosby, Stills & Nash standard. It has always been a favorite of mine and hearing Jimmy sing it, a true sailor, makes it so genuine. The lyrics powerful and personal: “Think about how many times I have fallen, spirits are using me – larger voices callin’. What heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten”. Whew. Thank you Jimmy Buffett for providing a sunny soundtrack to my life. Decades ago I started spending a lot of time listening to you on boats and beaches while watching my kids play in the sand. Memories like that cannot be forgotten.
