2018.11.14 23:55 SubaruToyotaFan1986 Lifetime movies and Hallmark movies - they seem to have a lot of good actors, but many of them don't end up in big-name films or franchises.

[Serious] since I can't retroactively edit the title.
Over here in the United Kingdom, Channel 5 airs a Lifetime movie or a Hallmark movie [or sometimes both] 11:15am-1:30pm and 2:15pm-4:00pm London time [GMT], at least in the run-up to Christmas.
I've seen the following actors regularly appear in Lifetime and Hallmark films:
A lot of them seem to have Canadian actors in [just out of interest, from when I've IMDB'd the films, not a complaint].
I'll admit, I have watched them from time to time, I'm not going to be a cinema snob [like Brad Jones' character, not Brad Jones himself], as I've seen bad movies [who hasn't?], and I've just gone with them for what they were.
Lifetime movies generally can be good entertainment for something light, if you're prepared to put up with cliches occasionally, whereas Hallmark productions are more, I suppose, for light entertainment or an anniversary movie if you're having a weekend away in a hotel and haven't got Netflix/Amazon Prime and the television's the only real entertainment [believe me, a friend of mine said she and her partner watched Backyard Wedding when it aired, said it was a bit naff, but better than nothing for an afternoon movie when slightly drunk on their anniversary - not a wedding anniversary, just an anniversary of how long they'd been dating].
Would you want to see someone like Fiona Gubelmann [who's mainly done TV series, and about 7 made-for-TV movies] or up-and-coming actress Sarah Grey in a major franchise like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or as a Bond girl in James Bond [would either be a good one?], or maybe even Planet of the Apes?
Would you consider made-for-TV movies like Lifetime and Hallmark as a good stepping stone for actors towards major franchises?
I'm interested to hear what you think.

2017.12.20 12:54 FinnagainsAwake The 'Hallmark Channel' Xmas Promotes Hetero-normative Movies With Too Many White People - by Zachary Jason (Slate) 15 Dec 2017

White! Christmas!
The Hallmark Channel’s 21-movie fusillade in the War on Christmas is a ratings sensation. I’m watching it all to find out why.
By Zachary Jason Dec. 15, 2017
At a rally in November 2015, Donald Trump heralded, “If I become president, we’re all going to be saying ‘Merry Christmas’ again, that I can tell you.” Of all his empty guarantees, the president has perhaps fulfilled none better than a counterstrike in the War on Christmas, and no battalion has fired more rooty-toot artillery for him than the Hallmark Channel. In 2017, the network is premiering 21 original Christmas movies (up from 20 last year)—42 hours of sugary, sexist, preposterously plotted, plot hole–festooned, belligerently traditional, ecstatically Caucasian cheer. To observe the first holiday season under the Trump administration, I’m bearing witness to them all.
Hallmark Channel, owned by the Kansas City, Missouri–based greeting-card giant, has boomed since Trump began campaigning. In 2016, Hallmark was the only top-15 entertainment channel with double-digit ratings growth, and viewership has jumped another 16 percent this year. Meanwhile, Hallmark’s Christmas programming, which this year began before Halloween, generates more than 30 percent of its annual ad revenue and has helped Hallmark become the season’s highest-rated cable network among women aged 25–54. More than 70 million Americans watched Hallmark Channel Christmas movies last year. The network has already approached that number in 2017, with three weeks and five premieres remaining. And the network’s strongholds map to Trump’s Electoral College victories.
After watching a few of Hallmark’s Countdown to Christmas films, the network’s burgeoning red-state appeal comes into focus. As much as these movies offer giddy, predictable escapes from Trumpian chaos, they all depict a fantasy world in which America has been Made Great Again. Real and fictional heartland small towns with names such as Evergreen and Cookie Jar are as thriving as their own small businesses, and even a high school art teacher (played by Trump supporter and the face of Hallmark, Candace Cameron Bure) can afford a lavishly renovated Colonial home. They brim with white heterosexuals who exclusively, emphatically, and endlessly bellow “Merry Christmas” to every lumberjack and labradoodle they pass. They’re centered on beauty-pageant heroines and strong-jawed heroes with white-nationalist haircuts. There are occasional sightings of Christmas sweater–wearing black people, but they exist only to cheer on the dreams of the white leads, and everyone on Trump’s naughty list—Muslims, gay people, feminists—has never crossed the snowcapped green-screen mountains to taint these quaint Christmas villages. “Santa Just Is White” seems to be etched into every Hallmark movie’s town seal.
And what some call sexism, Hallmarkland calls family values. CEO Bill Abbott has said that Hallmark Channel aims to build a “safe space” in a TV market that has gone “past the point of edgy.” “Safe” lines in this year’s premieres include:
Daughter: “You said you wanted [my sister and I] to spend more time together.”
Father: “I thought you’d go shopping or get your nails done.”
“I didn’t care about war reporting anymore. … I wanted a white picket fence and a husband.”
Wife: “I can sing, too.”
Husband: “But can you cook?”
None of these lines face retort. They are delivered earnestly and invariably received with a shimmering Hallmark smile.
Since launching in 2001, Hallmark Channel has remained the most unapologetically formulaic network on TV. Of 136 Christmas movies Crown Media (which operates Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries) has produced to date, nearly all feature white leads. Regarding diversity, their executive vice president of programming, Michelle Vicary, told Bloomberg Businessweek last year, “Um … we are taking a look at that.” Of this year’s 21 films, only Enchanted Christmas stars minority love interests, Latinos Alexa and Carlos PenaVega. (Even interethnicity relationships, it seems, are too taboo in 2017.) This winter, Holly Robinson Peete (from the original 21 Jump Street) will star in both The Midnight Show Murders (based on Al Roker’s novel) and a reality show alongside her husband, former NFL quarterback Rodney Peete. But Hallmark hasn’t announced any plans to diversify December next year.
The tropes, as mind-melting as they are mesmerizing, permeate casting, dialogue, pacing, set decoration, and mannerisms—as omnipresent as the fake snow that, upon closer inspection, appears to just be clumped-together fake cobwebs. Here’s a lethal drinking game: Take a shot of peppermint schnapps every time a female lead stumbles her speech or bumps into a nutcracker when she encounters the blandly handsome Old Navy mannequin of a male lead, as the besotted damsels do in Marry Me at Christmas, Miss Christmas, Switched for Christmas, Sharing Christmas, Christmas at the Holly Lodge, and The Mistletoe Inn. Swig some eggnog every time said male lead droolingly points to overhanging mistletoe, as happens this year (so far) in The Mistletoe Inn and as we’ve seen before in (to name a few) The Mistletoe Promise, Under the Mistletoe, Mistletoe Over Manhattan, Moonlight & Mistletoe, A Christmas Kiss, and A Christmas Kiss II. And pour a hot toddy down your pants every time a character urges the female lead to abandon her career in the Big Liberal City to restore traditions and family in her hometown, as women are directed to do this year alone in Enchanted Christmas, Switched for Christmas, and Christmas in Evergreen.
Then there are the more bizarre, and bizarrely common, character tropes:
• Beefy current boyfriends of the female leads who live in the Big Liberal City—most often high-powered co-workers but inattentive, obtuse partners—who make the outlandish gesture of buying a last-minute flight to see the female lead in her hometown (or, in the case of Christmas in Evergreen, flying a private helicopter 500 miles from D.C. to Vermont), only to show how inattentive and obtuse they are in person rather than over the phone. (This also happens in Enchanted Christmas and in 2016’s Christmas List.)
• A redheaded female friend (usually a barista or Christmas shop clerk) of the female lead who possesses the sole character trait that she’s maniacally invested in the heroine finding a husband. She spends all her breaks on the phone with the heroine and all her free time at the heroine’s parents’ house, a 40-year-old latchkey kid. We never see her house, because it is surely empty save a rotting 10-year-old Christmas tree adorned with stolen locks of her best friend’s hair. This archetype appears in Finding Santa, Miss Christmas, Switched for Christmas, The Sweetest Christmas (minor variation: redheaded sister), and A Gift to Remember (minor variation: strawberry blonde).
Also, in every Hallmark Christmas movie, the opioid epidemic has given way to Christmas Fever. This malady is unnamed and treated as joyful in Hallmarkland, but it culminates in a contagious psychosis in which everyone sees Christmas as the lifeblood of human existence. Symptoms include beliefs in:
• Christmas as vocation: In Christmas Festival of Ice, a minor spinoff of 2015’s Ice Sculpture Christmas, hotshot lawyer Emma (Taylor Cole) meets a 40-year-old, painstakingly swoop-haired, monosyllabic Christmas tree farmer (Damon Runyan). In less than a week, not only does he become her soul mate (sharing a few Yuletide platitudes over peppermint lattes will do that), he also convinces Emma to abandon the law and become a full-time ice sculptor. In Finding Santa (a spin on 2016’s Finding Father Christmas and the 2017 sequel Engaging Father Christmas), 40-year-old, painstakingly swoop-haired, monosyllabic zombie novelist/Uber driver Ben (Eric Winter) is estranged from his father solely because he refuses to inherit his father’s role as Santa in the annual Christmas parade. “I love you son, Santa or not,” his father eventually admits, sobbing and shaking. Soon after, Ben decides to quit both his jobs to prepare for that three-block sleigh ride year-round.
• Christmas as aphrodisiac: While G-rated, every Hallmark movie contains many shots that lovingly capture the burning eroticism the birth of our savior ignites—a tongue quivering for eggnog, lips biting at the sight of a man setting an angel atop the tree, orgasm at the assemblage of a train set. In Finding Santa, Ben looks overcome with lust as he watches Grace (Jodie Sweetin) decorate a sugar cookie with brown frosting. Soon after, as Ben reads “A Visit From St. Nicholas” to young children, Grace flashes him a coy smile and come-hither eyes.
But it’s the absurd plots, in which white woman must fall in love with white man and save Christmas, her career (often as a decorator, baker, or party planner), and her family within a week of meeting white man, that make Countdown to Christmas most charming and most problematic.
Take The Mistletoe Inn as a typical example. Kim (Alicia Witt), a 40-year-old car dealer, attends a Christmas-themed romance writer’s conference in Vermont, as you do when Garth (Casey Manderson), a pompous yet unpublished romance writer himself, dumps you by saying, “I just need to be with a serious writer right now.” An editor at the conference says Kim’s manuscript doesn’t capture her setting, New York City; turns out Kim’s never been. Not to worry: A scarf-wearing, exquisitely hair-gelled man she met 48 hours earlier, Zeke (David Alpay), buys the two of them last-minute plane tickets the next day. After one snowy night in a five-star hotel and Zeke’s four-second tour—“OK, this is Midtown. SoHo and Wall Street are that way”—Kim knows the textures of New York better than natives Wharton and Salinger. Seemingly within 12 hours, she rewrites the entire novel. A few days later—Christmas Day!—Zeke visits Kim at her father’s house. How’d he find the address? Doesn’t he have family to be with on Christmas Day? We’re missing the point. Zeke heard from a publisher (it seems Kim and her delicate lady brain couldn’t handle this news directly): On Christmas Eve, the editor had a chance to reread her novel and offered a book deal. Zeke and Kim kiss under the porch’s mistletoe as her dad grins dementedly from the window, holding a butcher knife and a 20-pound turkey that father and daughter alone were seemingly going to devour in one sitting. Fin!
The Christmas-down-your-throat bombast, holly-jolly sexism, the characters’ zaniness and unyielding impulsiveness—it’s all very Trumpian behavior. Hallmark Christmas movies channel and normalize a world in which the president can insult China, the press, Hillary Clinton, and the prime minister of the United Kingdom, and share anti-Muslim propaganda all in one day, and the very next proclaim to follow Jesus’ example of “respect for the sacred dignity of every person everywhere in the world,” as he did at the National Christmas Tree Lighting, which the Hallmark Channel broadcast exclusively.
In 2018, another year into the MAGA vortex, Crown Media will grow from 33 to 36 original Christmas movies. “The one thing we never hear from our viewers is that they have had enough!” Vicary noted. She added, with a familiar bravado, “Hallmark owns Christmas on TV.”

I remember you from The Sopranos!!! Any story you could share from filming? Oh, and I have a crush on you. Thank you! for both! it was an interesting experience because i came into it not having ever seen the show, but just being blown away because at the time, it was really one of the first TV shows, if not the first, that felt that much like making a movie. one thing i remember is that we all went out to Michael Imperioli's bar one night after shooting; he had a piano and was very interested in hearing me play classical music as we'd discussed that quite a bit. this, however, was at a time in my life when i was JUST beginning to experiment with enjoying an alcoholic beverage or two from time to time. well - that night i discovered cosmopolitans. i had two. when i went up to the piano to play a chopin ballade for michael, i discovered i was so drunk i couldn't make my hands go where they were supposed to! i just had no tolerance for it. haha!! it was my first experience trying to play classical music with booze in my system. such a bizarre funny memory!
'Sup Alicia! How did you get started acting? Did you have any struggles? Also, how do you usually approach a role? Sup!! my first role was in David Lynch's DUNE. and it really was happenstance. i had been on That's Incredible as a 5 year old; the episode repeated a few years later and the casting director saw it and had me come to NYC to audition for David and that was it! but yes for sure. over the years i've had some real struggles- times when i wasn't sure if i'd ever work again, that sort of thing. it's a tough business at times- even for people who have worked their whole life. i think it really challenges your faith in yourself and your determination that if this is what you want to do more than anything, you just have to keep going.
I must first say that I am LIVING for Autumn Chase on Nashville right now...you are KILLING it...one of my favorite roles of yours though is the movie you did with Queen Latifah, Last Holiday...what's a memory you have from working on that set? Do you have a fun anecdote you could share? :) Awww! that means so much to me, truly. i certainly had fun being her. she's sooo manipulative! haha. and working with sam palladio was an absolute giggle fest. ah working on Last Holiday- my fondest memory is just of the fact that we were all - cast and crew - staying for real at the Grand Hotel Pupp. the place was closed and we were the only guests! so it was a rare experience of being a huge family; seeing everyone downstairs at breakfast, in the hallways, going to the gym, etc. plus it was the middle of winter so there was not much to do but hang out together. much absinthe and whiskey and tequila was enjoyed in our downtime :)
Great job on your episode on TWD! What was the experience like filming that episode? I always read stories of how the entire cast is like a family and welcome newcomers with open arms. I know you only got to film with Melissa Mcbride and Lauren Cohan, but did you get to spend time with other cast members? It was extremely special. the kind of set where you know even at the time you'll have lifelong withdrawals on most other sets, y'know? those gals were beyond incredible- so very generous, so much just a part of the entire family of crew- there's no difference on that set between people in front of or behind the camera. the way it should always be. i worked w Andy too and didn't even know it until i went for a bathroom break and he introduced himself - he had driven an hour in to set just to be the voice on the other end of the walkie in the beginning of my episode!! unheard of. that's the kind of set it is.
Hi! Longtime fan, what are your memories of working on the movie Fun? Your performance as Bonnie was a huge inspiriation! Also so excited to see your name on the new Twin Peaks cast list! Oh wow! thank you sooo much! i absolutely loved playing bonnie. at the time i didn't know whether anyone would ever see the film- the fact that it made it to sundance and got critical attention was such a thrill, because shooting it was a very special experience. it's still one of the things i'm proudest of. i remember getting very little sleep- it was a 7 day shoot - and not being able to get out of character and having nightmares about killing people and hurting myself. was very immersive! but luckily that went away once the shoot was over :)
Do you take vocal lessons? Do you have a pre singing/going on stage routine?? I have vocal exercises from several fantastic vocal teachers i've seen over the years - to be honest i don't always do them tho! i can recommend one amazing 3 day course i took in LA called Singing For Actors that kind of changed the way i sing, the way i think about singing. David Coury taught it. pre-going on stage- i find that just relaxing and thinking of the stories i'm going to tell is actually more helpful than vocal exercises. at least at this point.
Hey, thanks for doing an AMA!!! I normally don't comment on these much, or actually at all, but I've really enjoyed your roles in the two shows I've caught you in - Justified and The Walking Dead! What was your favorite part about working on either, or both, of the shows? Do you have any fun stories from either of those shows, or experiences you won't forget? (Other then being on them, obviously!) Hey there!! thanks for commenting on this one- nice to hear from you :) those honestly are 2 of the most fulfilling roles i've ever had. the rare experience where you get the scripts, and they're incredible- then you film it and you couldn't be happier with the day's work - then it gets edited together and you're just blown away. it doesn't always go that way. my favorite part of both was just that. i knew at the time, with both, that they were spoiling me for other jobs!
Hello Alicia, I really loved your performance in The Walking Dead. I felt your character was sort of thrown in and taken out too quickly; if time was given to develop your character, I'd of loved to have seen you and that arc last a minimum of 3 episodes. Do you feel like you crammed everything into that character that you wanted to? It's hard for me to say- when i got that script i just was overwhelmed with gratitude that i'd been trusted with such a complete character, in just one episode. that almost never happens for a guest starring role, on any show- let alone a show as spectacular as The Walking Dead. so i really felt that i could have been given a 6 ep arc and easily had much, much less to do. this was so satisfying that, as much as i hated to have to leave because i loved the experience- i also felt i couldn't possibly have asked for any more.
All these years later, any production stories from Cecil B Demented that you remember or stick out in your brain? You were freakin' hilarious in that. Haha! thank you!! so many. shooting the 'porn' scene with the gerbil was pretty priceless. i was drawing inspiration off of some Tracy Lords videos a friend had lent me years before. turned out, when i met John Waters, he said that he'd cast me off my audition tape because i reminded him of Tracy, and she was a friend of his who he'd initially written the role for. i loved that sheer lace number i wore thru most of it!
What was it like watching Tyler Perry transform into Madea on the set of Madea's Christmas? haha...i bet that was a fun set! Hahaha! it really was. he definitely only was Madea when he absolutely needed to be, in front of the camera - as soon as he was off camera he was back to being Tyler. he was extremely fast! we finished ahead of schedule and i understand that's normal for him. most days, scenes that aren't even supposed to be filmed get filmed, because he generally only likes to get one or two takes of each shot.
What was it like getting your face eaten like that on the walking dead? It was one of the worst and horrifying deaths I have ever seen on the show! Haha! thank you!! we filmed it as the very last scene of the day, and my last scene of the show period. there was also a neck prosthetic which was meant to spurt blood, but it malfunctioned! so if anything it was meant to be even MORE horrifying. but still very satisfying. i had to trust that the walker stuntman was going to bite the prosthetic and not my actual face- he was really using his teeth!
Hi Miss Pasternak, how hard was it to give a lap dance to Allan? How many times you had to redo that scene? Aw that was just fun!! i think we must've shot it like 5 times? i definitely had whiplash the next day though haha. i had to see my chiropractor! what a ridiculous, awesome, funny scene to get to do. especially since it was chuck lorre, who i had loved since he was the original showrunner of cybill. i was so excited that he asked me to do that!
I saw your new song from LA last week on youtube and like it. But I can't hear all the words. Any chance you will be recording it? Which one? very curious! i played 4 unrecorded ones at Hotel Cafe last week- is it one of those? link please :) thank you though!! i also performed at AOL Build last week; one of the songs that they have up is also new, it's called 'Space'. and odds are i will indeed be recording. i have more than enough new music now to fill a new album- just have to find the time.
Link to www.youtube.com. > Link to www.youtube.com
Hard to hear the words. but you look great in it :) Oooh! thank you so much for sharing!! kind of my new favorite song :) i finished writing it that very day!!
Hi. what kind of music are you listening to? what are your favorite albums from the last couple of years? Right now absolutely obsessed with beyonce's new one. damn! what a revelation. i feel so proud of her, as a woman - and i don't even know her. not sure that anyone has ever captured what it feels like to be betrayed like that, and then to come out the other side - it's a masterpiece of an album emotionally and also musically.
Hi Alicia, huge fan of your work on justified! How was it working with all of the actors and are Walton and Timothy as fun as they seem to be? Thank you! yes- they were incredible. i didn't get to work with walt as much as i would have liked, but i think tim is one of the smartest actors i've worked with. full of good and right ideas. one of the rare actors that always made the scenes better with changes he suggested, in my humble opinion. i hope to work with him again. sweet person too.

Huge Dune fan here. What is one of your favorite memories from working on the movie Dune? Any inside info from the movie us plebs might not know? I asked Sting why he had only one name and he said 'my parents were too poor to afford more than one'! i got to see him again last year and i reminded him of this.
It's that "Fuckin' D-Girl!" Hey Alicia! Thanks for doing this AMA! I've loved you in Mr. Holland's Opus, Dune, and Twin Peaks, but I was really happy to see you in The Sopranos. What was your experience like working with Michael Imperiorli, Allen Coulter and David Chase? It was THE BEST!!! man, when i finished making that episode i realized how lucky they all were to be on a show like that. it was the first time i'd been on a TV set and felt like i was making a movie - i think The Sopranos was one of the first of its kind in that way. nowadays of course TV quality has become equal to and often greater than movies- but at the time that was a revelation. I would have loved to have been a regular on that show.
Are you the Tonez? As in the rapper from the intro to Justified? Hellz yeah he is! and we have done two songs together- check out 'my baby girl', out now (itunes, youtube for the music video we did, etc). and we also wrote one that we hope will be used on Justified next season!
Is Cybil Shephard as crazy as she seems? It was an experience hahahaha.
I know from working with you why you're so amazing! BUT! When did you fall in love with being a musician? I've always been in love with music and being a musician. it was about 7 years ago that i realized i had to do it ALL the time- not just in my living room by myself. since then i've been playing all over the world and recording and writing all the time- and i realize how incomplete my life was before that. now i feel more present even when i'm acting. YOU ROCK TONEZ!!
How is it possible that you are 38 years old and how common are red-haired vampires? Hahahaha!! i take that as a compliment! honestly i never think about age. i forget how old my friends are all the time- it's so unimportant except when taking stock of how far you've come etc.
Who's the favorite person you've kissed on camera and why is it Tim Riggins? Hahahaha! well i WOULD say yes- but would you believe i didn't actually kiss him on camera??? i wish!!! (if you go back you'll see it was only implied. dammit!)
Hello Alicia Witt, you are pretty. So, to my question, can you thank whomever decided to put Wendy Crowe in those skirts for me? That is all. THANK YOU! and you give me the opportunity for me to let you know that since i'm vegan, all those skirts were fake leather!
Enough about Cybill...what was it like working with Christine Baranski? She was the real star of the show IMHO. I LOVE and loved christine. and i agree. she was honestly one of my biggest role models- i was 18 when i started doing that show and she, to me, was everything a woman should be. the most wonderful mother, wife, person- so humble. and as an actor was and still is one of the most brilliant comediennes i've ever seen. i bow down to her.
You famously lost the part of Mary Jane in "Spider-Man" to Kirsten Dunst. Which other past roles were you considered for that you didn't get? Many! and there were many well known actors who auditioned for roles that i ended up getting. i never talk about that- i feel like it's bad form for whoever did get the part. it's so arbitrary. as actors we audition ALL the time. and it's rarely the person who gives the 'best' audition who gets the part. i can't tell you how many times i've walked into a room, known i didn't do the best audition they saw, and also knew i was gonna get the part. it comes down to what they see in the role.
What is the best/funniest practical joke you have seen happen on the set? I was doing a makeout scene with greg germann on ally mcbeal and he stuck a friggin banana down his pants. but he was laughing too hard so i never even felt it.
What's it like auditioning for roles in the 21st century? Is it just as daunting as ever, even for established actors and actresses? It is a crazy thing. you never stop auditioning! it doesn't matter how many things you've done- there is constantly the need to prove yourself. at this point about half the things i do i had to audition for; the other half are incoming offers.
What was Ben Folds like to work with? He is the most gifted producer i've ever worked with. by far. but you can tell that by checking out what he's produced for Sara B, Amanda Palmer, etc. he's a rare musician.
If you had to choose a woman to make out with, who would it be? Shanola hampton, my BFF! in fact i already made out with her. sure, it was on stage in The Gift in 2000 where i met her- we were playing lovers- but hey. that counts right?
Ben Folds once mentioned a project called "40 Fingers" that was going to be the two of you plus Amanda Palmer and Tim Minchin all on Piano. Was any actual recording done with the 4 of you and if so is there any chance it might be released sometime? We had wanted to do it but it was too hard to coordinate with all of our schedules. sadly i'm not sure it will ever happen.
Was it hard working with Charlie Sheen when you guest starred in Two and A Half Men? No! actually he was totally professional and a pleasure to work with.
What was it like working on Urban Legend? Hi! you know it was honestly the hardest work i've done on a job so far. simply because so much of it was 'natalie runs thru the rain at night' haha. even when i was doing an indoor scene, i was just having come in from the rain, so they would hose me down with cold water before i walked in! i spent most of the shoot shivering in wet jeans and boots. and because i was pretty much in every scene, i didn't have much of a chance to get to know or hang out with the rest of the cast. i am so glad i got to do that movie though. even though it made me terrified of the back seat for years!!
Hi, you are such a great actress and so beautiful! What was it like for you growing up with red hair? I have red hair too and I wanted to see if there are any parallels with our experiences. Thanks! I've always loved being a redhead. hands down! I was home schooled so i never had peer teasing or anything like that- but really i've always felt like it sets me apart and also really suits my personality. thank you for the compliment! GOOO ginja ninjas!
Hi Alicia! I loved you on Justified and thanks for doing this AMA! I was wondering if you had any dogs and if so what kind? My dog got killed a couple of days ago, so dogs are on my mind. Thanks again! :) Oh- i'm sending you so much love. tearing up as i write this. heart goes out to you. yes i have two rescue babies- maggie is almost 12, and ernest is my newest, he is 12 months old. i had to say goodbye to my beautiful ginger dog, Jake, in december- he was 14. and 5 days before that my 20 year old cat left her body. there is no pain like that. know that your dog will stay with you forever now, in your heart. put your hand there and feel - he or she is right there with you now.
Alicia, Can I have 2 questions: 1) What would the title of your memoirs be? 2) If you woke tomorrow and found you were now Bruce Willis, what's the first thing that you would do? I'd call my memoirs 'the other girl' (name of one of my songs) and bruce? hmmm. welll i suppose i'd do the same thing i'd do if i woke up and found out i were any man ;)
What happened with the actor who was cast as the Haitian? How much rewriting did they have to do when he quit? And do you think it significantly changed the course of the season? Edi Gathegi simply did not like the direction in which his character was going, is my understanding. i had very little to do with him and didn't actually speak to him about it, but that's what i was told by the others on the set. one thing that's awesome about the Justified writers is that i think they really respond to who they're writing for and i feel like if they sense the enthusiasm isn't there, the last thing they'd want to do is keep someone where they're not happy. yes i do think it significantly changed the course of the season- but how, we will never know!
What would you say was the greatest invasion of your privacy by the paparazzi in your career? The greatest invasion was actually an inside job. a makeup artist on Cybill was, unbeknownst to us, befriending several of us gals on the set and then talking to the tabloids. but the crazy thing was he was actually making stuff up to pad the truth. they actually will print total fabrications! but once i stopped hanging out with him, the intrusive photogs suddenly stopped showing up. (even when i was dating my co-star). the paparazzi has always pretty much left me alone- i am not that scandalous haha.
What does Timothy Olyphant smell like? Ha. on the set we all smell like makeup and hairspray! not that Tim and i had any makeout scenes- but that's the funniest thing about sex scenes. i just had one with matt lauria the other day for a new show called Navy St (it airs in the fall) and despite already being friends with him, they are the unsexiest things ever. and it's all about the powder and the hairspray and the modesty patches we wear- haha.
I always ask people in these AMAs if they know Vincent D'Onofrio. You were on Law and Order CI, so it may seem like a dumb question, but you were with Noth. So, the question stands - Do you know Vincent D'Onofrio? P.S. You were awesome in Dune. Actually i met Vince back at the Sundance lab - a workshop for up and coming directors- when i was 17. and i met mike rapaport (who i just worked with on Justified) at the same time. they teased me mercilessly because i was a skinny pale virgin and extremely - puritanical? haha. aside from that i never saw Vince again except for one day when he came to set to watch me shoot a scene with Eric Bogosian.
Welcome and hello from Worcester, MA. I know you left Worcester at an early age and I unfortunately did not get to see you at Mechanic's Hall in 2012. How often do you get to come back to Worcester and do you miss living/being in New England? I'm actually going to come back really quickly this weekend for my dad's 80th birthday! i'm sorry you missed the Mechanics Hall gig. there's a chance I may play again this New Years' if things work out, but i often don't know my schedule until a few weeks in advance.
Hi alicia! when are you releasing new record? have you rerecorded any old songs of yours for this one? Hi!! i am hoping to release it later this year- it's pretty much all recorded and the final mix is happening now. the song that's already been released which is rerecorded for this album is 'blind'- ben came up with a cool country/folk stomp sort of vibe for it, and i think it rocks. can't wait for you to hear! aside from that, they're all new ones.
Hi Alicia, it's always a delight to see you on screen. I have especially enjoyed seeing you on Justified, which is quite hectic to say the least. I was wondering if there is a genre/role you would like to explore? I want to do a really crazy silly slapstick comedy! farrely brothers or curb your enthusiasm. in fact curb is my ringtone.
Hi Alicia! Long time fan. I have two questions. Was it tough coming into fame at such an early age with your success on Cybill? I just showed my wife Four Rooms last week and she thought that you probably have some interesting stories from that group of women. Do you have any? Hi! thank you. i knew at the time that cybill was on the air what a gift it was- but it was odd too because unlike when you're in films (which was all i'd done up to that point), people come up to you with a sort of familiarity they don't if you're not on TV- they called me my character name everywhere i went, and stared and pointed without saying hi, that sort of thing. it is as though you're known for that character without being known as an actor, if that makes sense. but i knew it was a rare blessing to be on a hit show and i never took it for granted- even though i knew that the sitcom format was probably not my real comfort zone. does that make sense? the story i think of the most from four rooms is how i got them to agree to let me leave duct tape on my boobs for the topless scene!
If you never got into entertainment for a career choice, what would you do for a career? I'd be making music full time for sure. ooh either that or i'd be a chef. or a therapist!
I backed your kickstarter. You've got quite the pipes. I was going to ask about future music... but you answered that already. So, instead, what's your favorite dessert? And favorite desert, too? Favorite dessert! the mint chocolate chip sundae from plant based Pure Food & Wine in New York. ooh and anything from Crossroads in LA. desert- ahh one in Costa Rica. or- belize- or- croatia? i love the beach. hahaha. thanks for the questions!
We don't hear about this too much from actors over a certain level, but what do you think about some of the changing faces of the acting world? Specifically the near ubiquity of Casting Director workshops and the increasing pay-to-play nature of getting your foot in the door over the last ten years or so? That's BS. in my opinion. i think what's cool about present times tho is that ANYONE can get their work out there. if you have a kickass idea and talent, why not just film it and put it up on youtube? DIY.
Good morn, Alicia! biggg FAN here. Whom were you named after, just curious... ? Also, you shoud duet with Ben Folds amiga, Julia Nunes!! have a wonderful, wonderful summer. You rock, BTW. thanksya. I was named after a character on Little House on the Prairie! my mom loved that show and there was a character named Alicia on it.
Do you prefer to go by "ah-LEE-shuh" or "uh-lih-shuh"? Or do you have a different preferred pronunciation? AhLEEshuh! and you can call me 'al' as well. or a-dub. lots of friends do!
Hey Alicia, First off, I think you're absolutely beautiful, a real beauty! (Sorry, had to get that off my chest). But my question is, seeing that you are a singesongwriter besides an amazing actress, what artists have influenced you musically? Wow thank you! you make a redhead smile!! musically- i'm influenced by classic piano based singer songwriters- elton john, billy joel,. paul simon, carole king. also guitafolk poets like shawn colvin, ray lamontagne, etc etc. i love tom waits- i love sara b.
Did your mom actually hold a world record? You learned to read very early, do you keep reading for fun? what's your favorite book? She did! she was in the guinness book of world records as having the world's longest hair! she still has the hair too. i love reading for fun but often find myself using that time to write instead. i have so many favorite books!
Do you know—I mean, do you have any idea—how your performance opposite Crispin Glover in David Lynch's Hotel Room haunts me to this day? Or how mad I was at Cybill Shepherd when she interrupted Zoey when she was about to take a topless photo of herself to send to Fidel Castro? And how could you not laugh when Ray Wise was singing and dancing and you were playing the piano on Twin Peaks? And do I sound like a stalker or someone with perfect memory? What a wonderful compliment!! thank you so very much- and you sound like you have an INSANE memory! i don't even remember the topless pic to fidel castro haha!
I actually remember seeing you on "That's Incredible" ages ago. How did you get to be featured on that show? I had been in Good Housekeeping before that- my mom had sent a picture of me reading the magazine to the editor thinking it might get printed. when it did, that's incredible ended up calling. and that led to Dune! it's a weird world- i'm so grateful for the timing of everything, always. otherwise i never would have probably considered a career as an actor- i grew up in worcester, ma so that wasn't really something i had any exposure to there.
I'm still not over Tim Riggins. How did you enjoy working on Friday Night Lights? It seemed like an awesome cast. Also, how did you find the dynamic of working on a Katims show where the cast are allowed to improvise more than usual etc? It was a joy. to say the least! no less than 50% of everything you saw on screen was improvised. which is not to take away from the brilliant scripts- we didn't need to improvise a word. but it certainly added to the freedom and 'lifelike' feeling of it.
What was your favorite memory while working on The Sopranos? Is it inappropriate to say the big scene with Michael Imperioli where i'm giving him script notes and then- we fall into bed? i can't lie. it was fun.
Do you speak any other languages? If not, which would you want to learn? I have always wanted to learn italian! i actually downloaded a free app and have been playing word games in my spare time to try and learn a little something, instead of continuing with my Words with Friends addiction haha. but i'll probably buy Rosetta Stone and do it for real. i have many close italian friends (and i'm 1/4 italian with- we think- ancestors still over there) so i would have people to practice with.
Hi Alicia, I have watched you on loads of things, Cybill and in Law & Order and always thought you were great, but a performance that really sticks out for me was an early movie you did, called Fun. I watched it on late night TV when I was about 14 and I really thought it was a great film, your performance is really fantastic in it and the music, grunge styling etc really brings back my 90s teenage years (although my teen years had much less murder in them :) ) I think Bonnie and I had an identical wardrobe! The DVD available is a terrible scan and I would love to see it re-released I was always surprised it didn't become more of a cult classic. Question - Was the barb wire snag accidental ? YES it was accidental! so much of that movie was a beautiful accident- we had only 7 days to shoot most of it (and one additional day to shoot the shopping mall montage). we rehearsed lines ahead of time but on the day we often had no more than 2 takes for any given scene. so it felt completely guerrilla style and improvisational (altho there was less actual improv than you would think- the script was fantastically natural)
Big fan! Next time you're back in Worcester, can a buy you a chili dog at George's Coney Island? You're so sweet! I would rather take you up on dinner at belmont vegetarian tho :)
Hi Alicia! I can't wait to hear your new album! Who suggested you to do "StageIt" last year? It was extremely great! Hope you will tour Japan someday! Aw thank you Makiko! i heard about stageit from several musician friends of mine who said it rocked- and a costume designer i worked with is married to one of the guys who founded it so they helped hook it up!
Hey Alicia, I just heard your interview with Alison Rosen. Is she your new best friend? Yes of course !!
Bowfinger is one of my favorite movies, and you looked absolutely perfect at the premiere. <3. What was it like working with Al Pacino and do you have any new projects coming up? Congrats on the show! Link to m.imdb.com. Aww thanks!!! i LOVED working with dear al. he had been one of my inspirations before we worked together - i think he's without a doubt one of the greatest actors that's ever lived. and it's a blessing to work with someone like that and be able to truly say you're an even bigger fan after having gotten to know them and work with them. what a joy. yes! I'm about to do a new play in LA- it's a big one and i'm SO excited! i can't announce it just yet but it happens thru August. i'm also guest starring on the TNT show The Librarian- shooting that in Portland now. and i just did a guest starring role on a new show called Navy St that airs on DirecTv in October.
Do you check the back seat when you get in your car? I sure did for a long time after Urban Legend!
Hi Alicia! As a fellow amateur pianist I just wanted to thank you for inspiring me with your music. Also, what was the first song you played on the piano? At what point did you realize you can make a career out of it? Thank you so much! i'm glad- i started out as a classically trained pianist and always wanted to do my own songs live. it wasn't until about 7 years ago that i started doing it in earnest- on a professional level. i never knew that i could make a career of it. i was just so grateful that people would come to hear me and come back and buy my music. it's an honor i'll never stop being thrilled by.
Do you have any stories from working on "Bongwater"? I can't say I loved that movie but your performance was fantastic. Oh, how sweet of you to say! i really appreciate that. so many stories- the two that come to mind are getting to finally meet and work with the beautiful brittany murphy. at that point our paths had nearly crossed so many times, being peers and all- i will always remember her beautiful laugh and how she lit up a room just by walking into it. i still can't believe she has been so long gone. second memory is courtney love coming up to me at a party to say hi- did you know that the book was based on her young adulthood in portland? I knew it when i first signed on to make the movie. we weren't trying to make it about her or base it on her or anything like that- but it was written by one of the men whose, um, path she crossed haha.
Hello, what advice do you have to aspiring actors and musicians? Be true to yourself. if you believe in yourself, so will others. be prepared to fail over and over again. if that doesn't take you down, you WILL succeed. i swear.
Dune's one of my favorite movies of all time! What was it like working with David Lynch? Is he super quirky outside of film making? Any crazy set stories with Sting? I had no idea at the time (at age 7 as we filmed it) that it was the biggest budget movie of all time- i mean i knew, but i didn't realize that all films didn't have that extravagant sort of set, the costumes, etc. i was down in Mexico City for 3 months and i was only in the last 1/4 of the film! david was and still is one of the finest actors' directors i've ever worked with. if he hadn't been so awesome i wonder if i ever would have wanted to continue making movies. i mentioned down below but i did ask sting why he had only one name, and he answered' because my parents were too poor to afford more than one'
Since you haven't accepted leviathanbound's proposal yet ... would you Marry me?! Actually, more serious question - if you could have a role on any show that is playing now, what show/role would it be? I'm weighing all my marriage proposals and will get back to y'all soon haha. it would be Mad Men. sadly that isn't gonna happen because it's all cast and the final episode filming now. unless they make a movie? 7 seasons and a movie???
Hi Alicia, it was great seeing you on Justified this season. It's one of the best written shows on TV. My question is, what was your first reaction when you found out you'd be shooting Michael Rapaport in the dong at point-blank range? My first reaction was: THANK YOU JUSTIFIED WRITERS for giving me such a kickass scene after a kickass season! really as an actor that's all you can ever ask for. i was shivering with excitement when i first read that scene. it is so deep- aside from the sensationalism of the shooting in the balls haha. there is so much pain and emotion- she's saying goodbye to the only brother she has left, at the same time as she's taking revenge.
What was your experience working on "Four Rooms" like? How bat shit insane is Madonna? She wasn't insane! she's smart as sh&. i remember her black narcissus and gardenia fragrance, and her piercing blue eyes. i had a massive girl crush on her.
What's you favorite urban legend? Well i sure never walk under a ladder- but that was before i even did Urban Legend.
What is your favorite show on television? MAD MEN!!!
Alicia, I have loved you since your days on Cybill. I was around Zoe's age at that time and a lot of things you did with that character resonated with me growing up. I loved how you played your own piano. My mom used to coax me into practicing more whenever she saw you play on the TV show and say "you can be as good as her!" How different were you from the character you played on Cybill and how have you changed personally and professionally since those days? That's so cool!! i was different in some ways from Zoey and very similar in others. it's no secret that there was some, er, tension- on that set- so the thing that was similar was that when everyone was stressed, i was the only one that got to maintain a sense of not giving a sh*& haha. i didn't have to put on a bright smile if i didn't feel like it. the big difference of course was that i had moved out on my own when i was 17 and had been supporting myself more or less as a pianist for a year before that- making a living as i worked on having a career as an actor full time.
Was working with John Waters as disgustingly awesome as we imagine? YES! I can now go to my grave saying i had a sex scene with a gerbil in a john waters movie!!! my only regret is that i didn't keep a better journal during my time with him- he is full of stories and anecdotes and has one of the sharpest recollections i've ever come across. i however have a notoriously terrible long term memory. hoping to become better at keeping records of the amazing people i get to spend time with in future!
Thank you! i'm still really proud of Fun!
Where did you first learn to act? I'm stilll learning! have never had any formal training.
What role would you love to play? Any role that is different than ones i've done before! all i want to do is keep doing things that scare me- things that challenge me. have always tried to not play the same role over and over again.
What was your highest score on Galaga? I read you were an avid player at one time. YES! ok my highest score- shoot i'm trying to remember. i've definitely gotten to stage 34. i remember that.
You rocked in Urban Legend!! Past or present, who would you like to do a duet with? If you could work with any actoactress that you haven't worked with yet, who would it be and why? Do you believe in ghosts? Peanut butter and jelly, or just peanut butter? (or nutella) I would love to do a duet with either Sara B or Pink! or Elton or Billy Joel. actors: wow- cate blanchett, judi dench, christian bale, angelina jolie, to name a very few. there are so many. yes i do believe in ghosts. almond butter!
What are your future goals? More music, more acting, theatre? Coming to the UK anytime soon? :-) I'm about to do a play (straight play, not musical) in LA - stay tuned for details! my album is coming out later this year and i want to tour to support that- and i'm trying to figure out what i'm doing next. and i definitely want to play some more London shows soon!
Is your music good enough to listen to on an mp3 player or do I need to keep staring at cleavage while you perform? Hmmm... both? haha.
Hey thanks for doing this AMA, as a songwriter, what inspires you and what was your most unexpected source of inspiration? For sure my greatest source of inspiration is just life. i'm constantly jotting down lyrics, coming up with ideas that may or may not fully gel into a completed song. but it's true that from the greatest highs and lows, if you're willing to let them, the greatest transformations can come- and the most honest creative work.
Hi, Alicia! Have you keep in touch with any of your fellow Urban Legends cast? I haven't! i've run into all of them over the years tho.
Hello, I recently watched the documentary of Dune from jodorowsky. Do you think that there would be a chance that you choose to be part of it if it would be possible to do it nowadays? Yes for sure! i would LOVE to. perhaps now i'd be the right age to play lady jessica depending on how old she was. in the lynch version, i believe francesca annis was exactly my age, 38 (kyle machlaclan who played her son paul was 21)
I didnt even recognise you for the first few eps of Justified. So I think thats an acting compliment. But my question is, why does Timothy Olyphant make me, a fairly straight guy, feel a bit "funny down there"? That's an ENORMOUS compliment! my favorite thing is when people don't realize they've seen me in something else- i think that means i'm slipping into other characters fully. so thank you!! as for tim- yeah. not the first time i've heard that haha.
off, you're awesome in the show, my personal favorite of the Crowe's besides Darrel. Second, are you punk rocker underneath it all? If so, you should dress like it for an episode to throw people off... I'd love to! i was thrilled that i got to dress a bit punky on Law and Order. Detective Falacci always wore her thick eyeliner and rocker tshirts under her badge and gun. that was a fun character!!
I don't really know anything about your acting/singing career so I'll stick to the "anything" part of "AMA". If you went into a 7-11 with exactly $10, how would you spend it? I would buy some chewing gum, some baby wipes (just incase) and a glass bottle of water if i could find one!
I've heard rumors that you used to browse 4chan. Assuming those rumors are true, how long have you participated in internet culture, and has it ever been something that had an effect on your acting or singing career? I haven't - don't know what that is! i used to browse yahoo backgammon haha.

How did meeting David Lynch in your early life influence you? Or did it? YES! hugely... i really think if i hadn't made Dune at the age of 7, and if david hadn't been my 1st director.. who knows if i ever would have become an actor. he set the bar really high... i ended up working with him 2x more (on twin peaks and the HBO trilogy 'hotel room') and still to this day he is one of the most grounded, most appreciative, most level-headed directors i've ever worked with. he understands actors so extremely well. has a way of explaining what he means that no one else has. i hope i get to work with him again...
Were you the Hayward girl in Twin Peaks who played piano while white-haired Leland went crazy singing Get Happy? That was me!
What was it like being on the set of Dune? Did it look as great as it appears while watching the movie or was it more of a dull-looking set? Oh it was INSANE!! see my comment above about david lynch... but wow, it was the most expensive film ever made at that time ($75 million budget in 1984!). i really thought that was just what all film sets looked like! it was incredible beyond belief. all the creatures were made by carlo rambaldi, who created E.T., and the wardrobe was just ridiculously lavish and the sets were so beautiful. still to this day the smell of drying paint and plaster takes me back to when i first saw the sets being built on my first trip to mexico for wardrobe fittings, etc, before my actual shooting had begun.
I really love Four Rooms, and I thought you were great in it! Now my question is: what was like working with Madonna? Most stories you hear are negative ones; would you like to tell us differently? Thanks for doing this! Omg i had the hugest girl crush on her!!!! she was really sweet to me... i was playing her girlfriend in it so from the first time she met me she literally tossed a bunch of gifts at me. totally played into my girl crush :) she gave me t-shirts to choose from to wear in the segment (i picked one that said p---y!!) and gave me a necklace which i wore in the piece and still have today. and she smelled like gardenia. so i promptly went out and bought gardenia perfume. haha!!
Did you get to meet the stars/directors from the other 3 rooms or was it pretty separate? I've always wondered how the four director thing worked in practice It was pretty much separated into our own little short films... tim roth of course was in all four but aside from that the cast was totally separate! but i met them all at the wrap party. fun story: they had karaoke and i got up and sang 'flashdance' which was one of my fave karaoke songs at the time.. then i heard massive applause and laughter during the song and turned around to see jennifer beals had jumped up behind me and was doing the dance and pouring water!!!! sooooo awesome...
You were supposed to be her girlfriend? I totally thought you were her daughter. Now I have to watch Four Rooms again. Yes, see my comment below about 88 minutes with al pacino... yet another job in which my big kiss moment with someone awesome was cut out of a movie :) (actually in this particular case we never filmed it because sadly we ran out of time. i do have a pic of us kissing however, from rehearsal!)
What was working on Cybill like? I heard there was a lot of tension on the set - was it that bad? Causes? It was a long time ago :) you know there were a lot of changes of staff; we had 3 showrunners in 4 years... writers were constantly being let go, replaced, leaving for whatever reasons... so i think that definitely added to a sense of unsteadiness. but i have so many AMAZING memories from that experience! christine baranski in particular was like a big sis/aunt i never had... my 'dad' alan rosenberg taught me how to play backgammon like the fiend i became! and on and on. so many amazing friends, so many good times.
OMG, one of my favourite actresses ever shows up on reddit, and I have nothing to ask her! The only thing I can say is that when I was doing my military service, my fellow soldiers and I used to watch "Cybill" together, every day laughing and having a good time. Thanks for your great work! That is so sweet of you, and thank you for being our hero...
What do you remember about shooting with this guy? Haha!! wow i hadn't thought of him in years :) but yes, i remember shooting that scene really well, we were in a gorgeous church in koreatown, close to downtown LA. i remember we discussed whether people would think the line was lifted from a fiona apple song that was on her album that had just come out which was very similar in title.
Is Craig Ferguson as awesome as he seems? YES!!!!! i love that he doesn't look at the questions and doesn't stick to what the pre-interviewer asked... makes it so much more fun and free. he is hands down the most fun i've ever had on a late night show. 3 x!
Can we hear a David Lynch story that's specific to your experiences with him? He always loved to use 50's phrases to tell you you were on target with something, he'd come over and give you a very deliberate thumbs up with that awesome smile of his and say, 'Aces!' or 'That's the ticket!' still makes me smile to think of it!
I loved your role in the Sopranos! And my question: In her autobiography, Cybill Shepherd said some pretty mean things about everyone in Cybill, including you. How did you feel about working with her? THANK YOU!! loved working on the sopranos...
Well. she kinda said some pretty mean things about pretty much everyone she ever worked with, as i understand :) all i can say on that topic is, a lot of what was said about the all of the people she made mention of who were involved with 'cybill' was simply not true. it was sad (and hurtful to me, both on my behalf and on behalf of my amazing colleagues) to hear about it. but you know what, i have so many amazing memories of the experience in general, and that is what stays with you in the end :)
1) Loved seeing you on 'Friday Night Lights'. How were Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler to work with? 2) How was it to perform in 'Piano/Forte' in London? Would you like to work on the London stage again? I WOULD LOVE TO WORK IN LONDON AGAIN!!! dying to get back on stage!! i can actually share that, as of 2 weeks ago, it looked like i was going back there in only a few weeks (right after my US album release tour ends on june 14). i was asked to do a play with 4 weeks of rehearsal in london, a run in bath, then oxford, then some other theatres, hopefully ending in the west end. but thanks to british equity (their theatre union) that is not going to happen :( i'm so disappointed! but hopefully another time. FNL! i loved loved loved it. however i never got to act with either connie or kyle (met both in the makeup trailer of course!), but kyle did direct the second to last episode in the fifth and final season, which i was in (tho my unnecessary scene on the phone with madison burge got cut out due to overlong running time),so i did get to work with kyle at least in that capacity! i am so excited for connie's new show nashville... hoping i may get to work with her on that :)
FNL was a great show. you made it better. thank you . You are so sweet to say so, thank you. i feel the same way about FNL (being on it made me better... taught me so so much).. thank you.
1) First of all, I'll always think of you as St. Alia-of-the-Knife, just because I've seen Dune so many, many times. I can still quote many of your lines from that movie verbatim. 2) On the set of the movie, did they try to shield you from some of the more violent (or otherwise disturbing) content, given how young you were? Thank you!!! yes i do remember feeling very faint and needing to sit down when i first had to pull out the cords that were attached to the baron's 'chest' (which was actually a fake chest) once i killed him towards the end. they were gushing blood out of the back and it definitely made me feel sick. i knew it was fake of course but that didn't matter! and yes there are still parts of the movie i haven't seen... my mom covered my eyes in many parts when i first watched it and i still looked away at those parts as an adult (i hate violence in films... can't really watch it!)
Which cast was scarier to work with---CYBILL or The SOPRANOS? You truly aced that rôle. I thought your character made Chris crazed enough to kill her. HAHAHA!!!!! i can only laugh at that first one :) yeah chris really seemed like he was gonna blow a fuse when i walked away from him in the UTA offices!!!
If I'd been Jason Katims, I'd have given you & Madison Burge a spin off as a Judds type duo. Tom Wopat could be your dad. On the Ten Scale of TV show mothers & daughters, you two were an 11. Which is something, considering FNL all ready had a 10 in Connie Britton & Aimee Teagarden. What a great idea re: madi and me! did you know she's a singer as well? we are both going to be singing in austin on june 2 at the ATX Festival; they're having a special friday night lights evening with musical performances from those of us who are... musical!
To what extent do you use music theory when making your music? Is it just, "what sounds good" ? or do you actively make decisions in your music based on theory? Oh at this point it's all about what sounds good... or sometimes i will hear something in my head and have to play around til i find it. but all my years of studying theory/classical music make it so much easier to access what i'm looking to find, if that makes sense. that being said, i also really love writing tunes on the guitar, which i really can't play, and writing songs with people who can play the guitar but don't necessarily know the chords that well... people who play by ear. the freedom of that is really refreshing too..
What prompted you to create the kickstarter campaign for your upcoming album(s)? Welll i have a ton of musician friends who have done it successfully....it seemed like a great way to not only raise money for upcoming albums but also to connect with the people for whom i'm actually putting the music out. and it's been an incredibly emotional experience to be honest... to see that the live album was funded in under 24 hrs really blew my mind, and to be actually able to now hope i might be able to make a serious dent in funding my first full length studio album.. and i'm really looking forward to sending everyone their gifts... filling out all the thank you cards which i bought the other day... it makes the whole thing much more personal.
What are your favorite books? What are you reading now? Some of my faves are 'geek love', 'still life with woodpecker', 'the book thief', 'love in the time of cholera', etc. i haven't had time lately to read any new ones but i love to read. any suggestions ???
Holy crap! I'm a big fan! You are so sweet!!!!! thank you for being here!!
How was working with Al Pacino in 88 Minutes? That guy is kind of a mystery to me. I have no clue what he'd be like in real life. Al had always been one of my absolute, top top top favorite actors and role models... to work with him was a total dream...and i'm happy to say that from the very moment i met him at the first table read (i did 2 before i was given the role) i wasn't even nervous, he was that awesome and present. i adore him. got to know him quite well and hands down love that man. and to get to work with him/learn from him for 2 months so close up was a dream of all dreams. he is so good it really makes your head spin (i know that's obvious but seeing him work close up is really extraordinary).
Oh! I've got another question. Is it true that you were in talks to play Mary Jane Watson in the first Spiderman? And, if so, why did you pass? Was it a timing problem, just not being interesting, or being apprensive about something? I never passed... i mean i'd have to be crazy! (thank you for giving me the shot to clear up this pesky and ridiculous internet rumor!) i wanted to do that role so much... i did audition with tobey (along with mena suvari, jaimie king, etc etc) but they did not end up offering the role to any of those girls and continued casting for a good month after i auditioned before kirsten got the role. the rumor got started because i had met sam raimi very early on in the process and i was someone he had liked, so they asked him at a premiere of something else who he was thinking of for MJ and he mentioned my name... way way way before it had even gotten to the audition level!
Hi ms. witt, quick question: is there any chance you might play a concert in germany any time soon? :) in berlin, germany, to be exact? ;) cheers, roland. I really would love to, roland! horribly, i've actually never even spent time in germany. and have always wanted to go to berlin. so hoping i get to plan a european tour sooon... thank you for asking!
Hey Alicia! I just wanted to let you know that my name is Alia and I was named after the character in Dune. What was it like playing the role of an "evil princess?" HOW FREAKING COOL!!!!! wow!! i love that!!!!!
Alia wasn't evil tho :) she slayed the evil baron, so that makes her a good guy, right?
Did you ever smoke real pot while doing Bongwater? No! actually at the time we made that film, i had never smoked pot in my life! (i'd never even had a drink at that point.) late bloomer here :)
Wait, where you 21 when you started filming Bongwater? I can't remember... i think so? maybe 20? i don't remember. in any event (especially in hollywood!) most people have had a beverage or 2 (or more) before they're 21 :)
Favorite moment on The Mentalist? Friday Night Lights? Ahhhh... fave moment on the mentalist was describing my love, and how he smelled, and my memories of him, and the elephant he gave me. felt very real and raw to me especially on that particular day of my life when we shot it.
FNL... sooooo hard to choose!! all moments!!! maybe the one where i go to tim riggins in my trailer and basically throw myself at him and then pretend to be drunk as an excuse (she wasn't drunk). god i loved that character! and the whole experience of working on FNL in general.
Playing Mona Lisa has to be my favorite movie ever. It looks like everyone had a blast making it and I absolutely love watching it. This movie is the one I see when I'm upset about life and when I'm happy to be who I am. I'm a daddy's girl just like Claire. Did you enjoy filming it? How do you get your hair to do that "thing"? Oh wow!!! thank you so very much for mentioning this one. it is absolutely one of my favorites i've ever gotten to make... both the role i played and also the entire experience. you were right... we had such a blast. everyone on the set really got along, became friends.. it was shot in magical san francisco and i was going thru so much of what my character claire was going thru in real life at that time... a breakup, just finding my way into the world of dating, partying, etc... i had my first ever drink while making that movie (at age 23, yes i was a late bloomer just like claire!). and it was written for a ballerina but when i was cast, i suggested we turn her into a pianist because it's both the same story, and also, obviously, because i can play the piano. i can't dance to save my life! (which thing do you mean with my hair? i'm glad it did it! haha!)
So...who is Red John? Wellllllll...... nah! just teasin! i wish i knew! they don't even tell me when i'm gonna be shooting a new one til a few days before!
Hey Alicia! Saw your show in NY once- you got skills! Ok question- What's your favorite show on TV right now? THANK YOU! i can't wait to rock new york again on may 31, album release show at rockwood baby!! oh wow, fave show... tossup between mad men and smash!!
Sorry, but you're on Reddit, the correct answer is Game of Thrones. Eeeek! sorry my friends! that's on the very top of my list of shows to catch up on, i promise! i barely watch tv because i just don't have too much time... but i'm dying to see GOT!
Hi ! I just wanted to know, are you aware that Jeff Winger from Community is in love with you ? It got me wondering, do you know Joel McHale, or did my favorite show just randomly acknowledged your prettiness ? Anyway, thanks for answering all of these questions :) I don't know joel but i was so honored when they asked about using my pic in that episode :) thank you so much!!!!!!!
What would be the best way to hit on you after a show? Aww! just the fact that you came to the show would mean so much! it's such a gift to get to play my music for audiences... if you weren't there i wouldn't be able to do that, so... it means the world!
, I love your music! Acting, too, but when I heard your cover of "You Can Call Me Al", I just pinged! And I love your originals! Two questions: One, I thought I heard once that while you were on Celebrity Jeopardy a couple of times, you would have loved to be on the "real" Jeopardy, but you're bummed that now you can't. Is that true? (I know you'd totally kick ass on J! ... and I'm a former champ myself, so I love the game.) Two, do you ever think "Hmmm, I never went to college/university ... maybe someday later, I'll go and get a degree in ________"? And if you do, what would you want to study? To be honest: i don't think i'd stand a chance on real jeopardy! (i'm not good with trivia; have a great short term memory but not for facts/stories etc!) you may have heard that about wheel of fortune, tho. i'm great at that, and word games in general. i actually was on real wheel when i was 14, on teen week, and was super excited about hopefully raising some money for my recent relocation to LA. but sadly i hit bankrupt 2 (or 3?) x. when i appeared on celeb wheel i won tho! got to donate a ton to charity. ooh if i were to go to college/uni i would maybe study astronomy! or french. or, i have a friend who has been working on a degree in spiritual psychology (which is amazing). it's one of those things that makes me wish there were 48 hrs each day. i'd love to but i just don't have any time between my acting and music right now... but yes i would love to take at least a course.
I used to love Cybill (I'm from Ireland and they used to show it quite late at night here) and I always imagined it would be a blast to work on, so my question is: Is Christine Baranski as amazing as I imagine her to be?! Sidebar: Urban Legends was epic!!! YES she is! and thank you so much for the urban legend shoutout!!!! i couldn't get in my car without checking the back seat for years later. still cant :)
John Waters has always facinated me for being such an excentric, What was he like on set? How did his directing style differ from other directors you've worked with if at all. I'll take my answer off the air. I LOVED working with him! what struck me the most about him was his extreme eloquence. he could tell a story, an anecdote, like nobody's business. his memory is incredibly fierce. he obviously loves meeting people and loves every moment of the crazy adventure that is his life. directing style wise, he didn't actually give us too much specific direction! he told me right after i met him that he had cast actors who pretty much gave him what he was looking for on the audition (i hadn't met him prior to getting the role; had just auditioned on tape). so he really didn't tweak our performances much at all from what we came with. it felt like a free for all, in the best craziest most fun way!
I had to look up who you played on Twin Peaks, and I was like "Oh yeah! Her!" What did you think about the show overall? Any interesting stories? I loved working on that show!! wish it had gotten to continue on... i wonder how it would have resolved... was one of the most intriguing shows that had ever been on TV at that point for sure, in my opinion...
My BFF's name is Allia and she was also named after the character in Dune. ... BFF? REALLY????? i had no idea there were so many gals named after alia!! that is so freakin cool!!!!
Have an up vote for more interesting proof than just a tweet! Also, you've done so much and, to the publics eye, made so much money, How'd you end up on kickstarter? It's a misconception to be honest... i'm working like crazy but all these indie films... not big paydays :) they don't leave much left to self-produce/fund an album (or much of anything else)... so it's just the reality of it. i'm not on a label so for the time being, it's all coming out of my own pocket, and it's not cheap... so that's just the truth. kickstarter is amazing not only because it raises money to bring your music into the world but also because it allows you to connect with the people youre making the music for at the same time...it's been incredible.
What can you tell us about working on "Fun"? Your performance in that left a big impression on me, because as manic and barely contained as your character was, it came off very natural and almost improvised. How did you prepare for such a role? Thanks for doing this IAMA! Thank you so much for mentioning that role... it was my first lead in a film, it was shot in 7 days and believe it or not, altho parts were indeed improvised, it was so well written that many of the parts that feel like they were, were actually written that way almost word for word. to prepare, the other actress, renee, and i spent time together rehearsing, running our scenes, getting to know each other a bit, because once we actually were shooting there was no time to do anything but just get it down on film and move on to the next. we also did some work practice shooting on handheld just a few scenes ahead of time, to get used to it. some scenes, on the day, we only had one take of. the fact that the film ended up going to sundance, or even being seen at all, was a huge and amazing surprise for all of us involved... even tho renee and i were only 18 at the time, it was still the lowest budget, most informal shoot either of us had ever done.. we had no permits; the background actors were real people; the neighbors in the houses we knocked on doors of were just the people who lived there for real...we got chased out of a strip mall by a gun toting hermit who came bursting out of a store that we thought was closed on a sunday. so it was an adventure to say the least! No time to get out of character.
You were the best detective on Criminal Intent. Did you enjoy it? Is there any chance of you replacing Benson if/when she does leave, and did the previous talks get far? HA!! thank you!! there were never any previous talks to come back to CI tho, that was an internet myth :) i would love to reprise fallacci any time!!
Your hair is best when messy. (glad you like my hair messy. that's how it normally is! i can't style it to save my life!)
Did Cameron Crowe explicitly discuss with you how your VANILLA SKY role might be a reference to your role in DUNE? Not at all!! he told me he would do a jig if i said 'yes' to playing the role when he called me to offer it to me tho (i had auditioned for the cameron diaz role originally)... i will never forget that :) he did a jig for me on the set when i showed up too!!! haha.
Do you have a laugh over the fake photo shopped nudes of you on line? YES!!!! especially the giant fake boobies!! my natural breasts are so much better :)
Hey there Alicia! I've been a fan for years. Any interesting stories about the set of Four Rooms, Tim Roth, or Madonna? I remember you being on That's Incredible at a very early age, would you change anything about being in the spotlight being so young? I wouldn't change a thing... if anything, after i did 'dune' i begged my parents to let me come to LA to be an actor and they didn't want to uproot the family at such a young age, so by the time i finally got to move to LA at 14 i was more than chomping at the bit... i knew immediately when i started making 'dune ' that this was something i'd want to do for the rest of my life, and i thought, no time like the present!!
"Good" in the sense that it left the question completely unanswered? :p.
What genre would you classify your music, if you could? So far where's been your favorite place to perform? What do you do to kill time on the road? Love your voice, good luck on your album! THANK YOU!! i think it's piano rock, in the same genre as sara bareilles, ben folds, the fray etc. billy joel/elton john are huge influences. the live album will give you much more of a sense of what i'm doing these days i think!! so excited for it to come out! and gosh, favorite place to peform... maybe rockwood music hall, where i'm playing my NYC album release show and where my live album was recorded!!
I want to ask you about getting jobs. What do you do to keep up your motivation when your constantly having to look for gigs? I'm not in the business. Maybe at this point of your career you have alot of work. What helped you to keep that motivation to stay within acting when there is so much instability of acting gigs? Thanx. You know, the thing about this business is that you just never know. all you can do is believe in yourself, and keep going for it. and don't wait for someone else to make your dreams come true. for example, i've just written a script and am trying to get it set up now... i do indie films that i believe in even when there's no money... it's just about remembering this is a crazy business and if you're not putting your heart and soul into it, it's just not worth it. and personally, i wouldn't trade my crazy life for anything.
Which song have you learned to play on piano that has been most satisfying to you? Ooh well definitely playing/singing my own at shows is the most satisfying... but my favorite classical piece to play is still 'liebestraum' by liszt. so many memories. i taught myself how to play chopin's ballade #1 in G minor after i'd finished taking lessons tho... and that is still one that i love to play because i hadn't learned it for piano competitions like so many of the pieces i learned as a kid/teenager... i learned it just because i'd heard it and was in love with it, so i taught it to myself. so getting to the point where i could play it up to speed and from memory was a big thing for me...and i still love playing that piece.
How was Urban Legend to film? Of the rash of slasher films in the late 90s, I thought it was amongst the better ones. The "Aren't you glad you didn't turn on the light?" scene was particularly shocking. Did you learn loads of other urban legends during the making? Any that went un-used which could've made for some great scenes? Oh yes that scene really scared the crap out of me! i don't know any
Why is it that whenever I read an interview with you or an article about you, there's always the impression that you either don't like Worcester or you don't want people to know you're from there? Hmmm! i don't know! neither are true! i did move out to LA... so it's fair to say i like LA better right..?...but i was definitely born in woosta and have nothing but huge love for everyone there!! i don't feel i grew up there tho, since i came to LA so young and had all my formative experiences here... y'know? maybe that's what you're getting from those interviews? I don't know worcester well at all just cuz i left so young.
Holy crap! You're the kid from Dune! Okay, my questions. What did you take away from working on 'Opus'? Are you still in contact with some of the actors/actresses from that movie today? Last but not least, good luck on your music career! Thank you!!! see above for clarinet stories on 'opus'. not in touch with any of those actors any more tho!! thank you for the music career shout out too!! so excited for my upcoming tour...
Do people often confuse you with Lauren Ambrose? I used to get that when 'six feet under' was on for sure! (see question above for more on that!)
Alicia, was it hard to leave home at 14 to play piano at the Beverly Hills Wishire? It was a dream to be living in los angeles, and i felt so very lucky to have the chance to make my living doing something i loved... playing the piano in the lobby lounge at the beverly wilshire hotel allowed me the time to dream and to scheme... and to express myself through music while i was waiting for the chance to get to do it for a living. it feels like now it's all come full circle with my own music now taking as much of my time and my heart as my acting work... thank you for the question!
One of my favorite movies is Mona Lisa Smile, but most people I know haven't seen it,so that is one of the first movies I recommend to friends. You are outstanding in it! Fantastic ensemble. I WONT CHOOSE!
My one question: If you had to choose between only being an actress or only a musician, which would you choose and why? Thank you so much for the kind words on 'playing mona lisa'!!! That means a lot to me, and i love that so many of you have commented on that film! i honestly didnt' know so many had seen it.... it's one of my very favorites i've ever done.
Playing Mona Lisa is one of my all-time favorite movies. Where does this rank in your personal favorite films and do you have fun stories from set? It might be my very favorite experience all around! see above for PML story :) thank you so very much for that, it means a lot to me!
The episode of the sopranos you were in is probably one of my favorite episodes. How was working with John Favreau? and working on The Sopranos in general? I loved the whole experience!! see above for more sopranos answers :)
Whoa, I can ask redhead from Vanilla Sky anything I want. Technology is amazing. As a fellow ginger I want to know - Where did you have your favorite tacos and what made them better than any other tacos you have had before? My homemade guacamole and some daiya dairy-free cheese from whole foods (i'm vegan!!) oh and a margarita on the side?
What's the last song you listened to in your iPod? Probably 'cough syrup' ... i love that song...
Why are you so sweaty? LOL!! i guess i shoulda taken a diff pic! i was on set shooting 'pasadena' a few days ago and took that pic to get verified on reddit... it was like 95 degrees out and we were about to start shooting and i had to grab that pic really fast!! but that's why i'm sweaty lol!
